Historic
Buildings, Ancient Monuments and Sculpture
Condition
surveys are a regular part of our work on historic buildings, monuments
and sculpture. Surveys involve detailed inspection and examination,
and recording of defects. Depending on the nature of the building
or site, it may be appropriate to carry out further investigation
or analysis, ranging from archival research to material investigation.
We typically employ photography and drawing to record condition
and to locate and illustrate problems or defects.
Surveys
of historic buildings are undertaken to provide a detailed understanding
of the condition of the building and how architectural details and
materials are functioning. Where possible aerial platforms are used
to allow close inspection to provide comprehensive information for
the development of a schedule of work and specification as a prerequisite
to tendering a programme of conservation and repair work.
Archaeological
sites are particularly vulnerable to damage and loss. Survey is
undertaken to identify priorities for protection and conservation
and as a basis for making practical recommendations on how this
work is to be carried out. Methods of securing the fabric are designed
to prevent destruction or confusion of evidence and to enhance legibility.
Recording of archaeological masonry is always a priority and our
speciality.
