The interior
of the seventeenth century chapel of Lincoln's Inn was recently subject
to an extensive refurbishment. A substantial part of the work was re-plastering
of the internal brick walls. Ingram Consultancy acted as specialist
advisor on the plasterwork from survey stage to completion of the refurbishment,
with the following general scope of work:
- Survey
- Prior to carrying out any re-plastering work an investigation of
the plaster was necessary to establish the plaster condition, composition
and chronology. Part of the brief was to satisfy English Heritage
and other parties involved that the plaster was not original and that
defective plaster could be removed in preparation for re-plastering.
This included examination of the plaster layers by opening up 'windows'
at selected locations. This initial investigation was essential for
obtaining listed building consent for re-plastering.
- Specification
- A detailed specification was produced for all work to the plaster,
including the removal and recording of later plaster layers, and re-plastering.
- Supervision
- Ingram Consultancy provided supervision throughout the contract
period and issued instructions to the contractor as necessary.
- Recording
- The existing and obviously recent plaster finish coat was carefully
removed to reveal undercoats. The undercoats were recorded on drawings
indicating any features, such as mechanical key, supports (tiles,
tile pieces and lath), and defects, mainly cracks and areas of detachment.
