Professor
John Ashurst, Architect, D Arch RIBA, worked in private architecture
practices before joining the Ministry of Public Building Works (Ancient
Monuments Division), and progressing in his career to principal
architect for English Heritage in charge of research, technical
advice and training; following his extensive career with English
Heritage John became a freelance consultant leading to his appointment
as Professor of Heritage Conservation at Bournemouth University
and the establishment of specialist courses in conservation training
and a historic building consultancy which subsequently transferred
to a private practice specialising in the conservation of historic
buildings and archaeological sites. John was co-author of English
Heritage's Practical Building Conservation volumes, co-author of
Butterworth Heinemann's Conservation of Building and Decorative
Stone and author of Mortars, Plasters and Renders, published by
the EASA, of which he is an honourable member. He is currently working
on The Care of Ruined Buildings for Butterworth Heinemann.
Graham
Abrey, Building Surveyor, BSc (Hons), Pg Dip (Bldg Cons), trained
as a building surveyor and has specialised for the past ten years
in contract work involving repair, conservation and maintenance
of historic buildings. He has considerable experience in site supervision
and project management and in the preparation of repair schedules,
specifications and contract documents relating to building conservation.
He has had many years experience working for a masonry contractor
and more recently as a freelance consultant specialising in the
survey, cleaning and surface repair of stone, brick, terracotta
and stucco buildings.
Catherine
Woolfitt, Archaeologist and Conservator, BA, MA, MA Art Cons,
trained in history and classical archaeology in Canada and Greece,
and in practical conservation at Queens University, Ontario, Canada,
leading to work placements in Rome, Scotland, and England. For the
past eight years she has directed her archaeological and conservation
experience towards materials problems in archaeological sites and
on historic buildings. She carries out site recording and in situ
conservation of stone, plaster and painted surfaces both as commissions
and exemplar works, and analytical surveys of materials problems
in situ and in the laboratory. Catherine teaches and writes on her
subjects as part of her work at Ingram Consultancy.
